India’s small-scale dairy sector faces chronic challenges such as heat stress, poor ventilation, labor-intensive milking, and high input costs for feed and fodder, affecting milk production and farmer incomes. Climate-smart cooling, milking, and fodder solutions offer a sustainable pathway, reducing stress on animals, lowering labor demands, and improving yields, especially when tailored to local farmer needs.
In Sambalpur district, Odisha, Chuleshwari Nayik, a dairy farmer managing 30 cows, 40 goats, 10 chickens, and 7 acres of paddy land, leads a dairy farming initiative focused on improving animal welfare and milk production. Despite her efforts, the farm faced severe losses due to heat stress, limited fodder access, poor shed design, and manual labor demands.
To address these challenges, Chuleshwari Nayik adopted solar-powered milking machines, dairy shed, and a hydroponics unit for year-round green fodder, resulting in:
🐄 Reduced heat stress with cool roofing and foggers, improving animal comfort and health.
🐄 Increased milk yield and income through solar-powered milking machines reducing labor and improving hygiene.
🐄 Year-round green fodder availability via hydroponics, lowering feed costs and dependency on external sources.
🐄 Reduced manual labor for cleaning and milking, easing physical burden on the family.
🐄 Improved sustainability with solar-powered technologies minimizing reliance on grid electricity.
Chuleshwari Nayik now plans to expand her dairy herd and install a biodigester to utilize cow dung for biogas and organic slurry, enhancing farm sustainability and energy self-sufficiency.
